Four Roads in the Garden of Beasts
Eric Larson's 2011 book, In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, and the
2010 film version of Tatiana de Rosnay's novel Sarah's Key sparked an interest in two particular responses to Hitler's
regime: appeasement and collaboration.
Four Roads in the Garden of Beasts uses these two books as the jumping off point to discuss the history of
appeasement and collaboration - and to explore the ever-present question: "What were they thinking?!?!?
But we will also look at two other "roads" through the Garden of Beasts that was Nazi Germany: resistance and
dissent. The story of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose resistance movement in Munich launches the discussion of
resistance while Dietrich Bonhoeffer will start us off in an exploration of dissent.
